Mills County Loess Hills Have Unique and Interesting History
The Loess Hills along the Missouri River in Mills County reveal ancient soil formation processes from glacial to postglacial times. Monona and Ida soils mark ridge tops and slopes with calcic, limy features, lime concretions, and pipe stem-like structures. Deep gullies show erosion tied to slope, soil composition, and early misuse. The region bears traces of Native American presence, exploration, and settlement, and continues to showcase wildflowers, native grasses, and artifacts.
