Ride with General Sheridan remembered in local tale
A familiar Civil War yarn tells how Phil Sheridan led a fearless charge at Winchester on a black horse. The hero plots describe his daring at the breastworks, the capture of guns, and how even a Southern sharpshooter marveled at Sheridan's near-mythic leadership. Mr. Dull is noted as accompanying Sheridan for much of the effort.

Malvern Opens Baseball Season as Lightning Strikes Town
A severe storm disrupted Malvern with sharp lightning and heavy rain. Lightning struck L. G. Adams hay barn, burning it and destroying about fifteen tons of hay, with insurance covering part of the loss. James J. Wilson’s Marion Avenue home chimney was damaged by a bolt, and another strike near J. M. Strahan’s residence caused plaster and soot spread. Mills County Agricultural Society held a meeting, updating the fair premium list and planning tents for stock. The Malvern baseball season opens this afternoon at the Athletic Park with Malvern vs Tabor, Mayor Cook to pitch, Forest Deardorff to pitch for Malvern, and a full-town turnout expected.
