East Liberty area notes a church work day last Wednesday with volunteers planting 26 acres of anru farmed by the church workers. Rev J. Henderson and local workers led the effort, followed by a quilting session and a devotional hour. A church gathering is planned for Wednesday June 17 to continue quilting and dining was arranged by several local families.
Malvern resident T R Potts, likely the town’s most active alderman, marks his 93rd birthday with his routine walks, reading, and perhaps a few cards. A former teacher, he is one of Iowa’s oldest retired educators, a Mason since 1874, and among the few who met Abraham Lincoln.
A wartime notice highlights cost details of Navy bombers. It cites the giant four motor patrol bomber at about 700000 dollars and a Scout Bomber at about 143000 dollars. It urges rapid production and sale of war bonds and stamps to support naval aircraft while encouraging daily purchases.
The Silver City alumni banquet was held at the Methodist church Friday night serving 94 plates. President Cliford Moore acted as toastmaster with intros by Glenn Skerritt and Mark Swarte. Music featured a vocal solo by Mrs. Kenneth McMahan and a piano solo by Donald Goos. To tes honored the acrostic America Aims. Officers elected included Mark Swartz as president and Clyde Schoening as treasurer. Attendees from afar included families from Omaha, Glenwood, Council Bluffs, Mitchell, and Treynor. Also noted was a Margarite Burgoin fifth birthday party with Mother Goose favors and a separate Baptist church donation party for Rev Elden McMullen.
Union Bible School closed Friday with a picnic supper and an open air service awarding prizes. Donna Lee Mott won first prize, a gold star and a book. Second prizes went to Ida Kirlin, Emma Kirlin, Francis Clipson, Iria Croushorn, Creta Kruse, Donald Marr, and Gerry Hriley. Third prizes were awarded to John Clipson, Marilyn Boles, Lenora Techau, Betty Techau, Aus tin Croushorn, Mabel Marr, Naomi Frazier, Marian Carlson, and mentors Rev Eldon McMullen and Rev Ivan Magera.
Mr and Mrs Glenn Skerritt and son Harold hosted an outdoor fireplace gathering Sunday night to honor Clarence Burgoin who will join Uncle Sam Army at Ft Crook on Tuesday. Attending were Clarence Burgoin and spouse Walter Godfrey Ren Burgoin Margarite James Burgoin Marjorie Edith Burgoin and Vinson Goos plus the Burgoin circle from Council Bluffs.
Neighbors celebrated Mrs. Alta Pullman's birthday with afternoon visits and gifts at her home. A Rebekah Circle surprise party followed with a pot luck lunch and more gifts. A separate meeting of Rebekah Circle was held northeast of Silver City with business, drawings, and refreshments.
CHAMPION HILL vacation bible school closed Friday noon with a weiner roast and an average attendance of 43 over the ten days. Nearby families and visitors from Hast inge Greeley and Oakland joined in Sunday events and social visits. Local residents attended reunions and visited relatives in Malvern Omaha and Ft. Crook, with several families hosting guests at home and sharing meals during the week.

Control depends on area size, with chemical treatment for half acre or less and smother crops or clean cultivation for larger patches.
