Visiting Mills County from Oregon Reflects Timber Country Life
Milo J. Wearin, a Mills County native who left 44 years ago for Oregon, visited Mal. Vern last week to see his sister Mrs. Sherman Jones. He noted the timber region’s drought and the hop market’s decline after repeal, and described long inland travel via California and Kansas. His account contrasts with local May highway death stats showing a drop to 82 fatalities, giving a snapshot of era travel and industry conditions in 1938.

Mills County Election Echoes and Voter Quirks Report
Mills County voters showed excitement as the Democratic primary rolled in. Eldest voter M T Davis drove to the polls in a Nash and cast his ballot while his wife backed Lincoln. Local observers and photographers covered early voting in Canfield and Henderson, with reports of intense competition for justice of the peace and a three way race for county constable. A high base cost for polling and ballots dampened turnout in St Marys, while Benton’s heavy vote contrasted with slowness due to missing counting boards. Frank J. Plumb’s defeat for county supervisor leaves him still in public life into 1940.
