Democratic nomination arcs for Illinois governor at Peoria
Carter Harrison was unanimously nominated for Illinois governor by the state Democratic convention in Peoria on the 2nd. The president made several appointments including Kasson to Germany and Byers to Italy. Reports say nine hundred hungry Indians in northern Montana lack agency relief, risking conflict with whites. The president vetoed the Vitz John Porter bill. the House overrode the veto, while the Senate did not concur in the ensuing action.

In 1853 Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania, Billy Thomas, a formerly enslaved man from Virginia, escapes to safety in the north. Five U S marshals abduct him from a hotel, he resists, dashes into the Susquehanna, is wounded, and seeks refuge in Canada as townspeople rally to "save him" from capture.
