James Sandiland a pioneer of the county died suddenly at his son John Sandiland’s Emerson home after a short walk in the yard. Born December 19, 1813 in Scotland he came to America at 23, lived in Illinois and Franklin County before moving to Black Hawk, Mills counties and later to Hastings. He died June 30, 1902 at age 88 years 6 months 10 days, leaving four living children and a widow of eighteen years. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Emerson with Rev J D Weenly officiating.
