Iowa Welfare Spending 1968 Falls Behind Personal Income
Iowa welfare expenditures in 1968 totaled about 833 million dollars, roughly eight cents of every personal income dollar. National welfare spending reached 55 billion, about 92 percent of personal income. Iowa sees Social Security as its largest share, with veterans programs close to 100 million, plus Medicare and other public services. The Dimensions of Iowa Welfare discussions in February invite citizen debate, using University of Iowa data to inform public welfare decisions without taking sides. Citizens will shape their views through self-guided and group discussions facilitated by Extension Services and state universities.
