Smallpox Case Sparks Quarantine Near Hastings
A young Swedish immigrant named Johnson, brother of Mrs. J F Miller, is ill with a severe smallpox form at his sister’s Indian Creek township home. He also has pneumonia, prompting quarantine measures to prevent spread. Rev Hull of Hastings broke quarantine by slipping away Tuesday night aboard No 14 to Des Moines.

James McMillen Dies After Brief Illness
James McMillen died at his home in the northern town area after a short illness. He was in his 51st year and had lived in the county for over fifty years. The funeral is set for Saturday at 2 PM at Liberty Church. Born in Virginia on August 25, 1817, he moved to Ohio as a child and later to Missouri where he married Mary Campbell. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters, all surviving except one son. His first wife died in 1888. He married Fanny Rogers on December 18, 1890, who also survives.

Death of Alex Bowen Pioneer of Mills County
Alex Bowen, one of Mills County east side’s oldest residents, died Friday after a brief illness from a stroke. He came to the county about forty years ago, built a large land and farming fortune, and resided on his home place southeast of Hastings. He never married, left a large fortune to relatives, and had sizable land in Mills County and Nebraska. The funeral Sunday morning at his residence was led by Rev. C. M. Cline of Emerson Baptist Church and he was buried at North Grove cemetery. Thus passes another Mills County pioneer.
