Washingtons soil conservation efforts at Mount Vernon traced
Frank H. Mendel cites George Washington as early soil conservationist, detailing his methods at Mount Vernon from 1749 onward. Washington tested harrowing versus furrowed land, retired crop fields, used straw and weeds as mulch, and promoted grass cover to prevent erosion while improving fertility and crop yields. He pioneered crop diversification, fertilizers, mule raising, and meticulous farm records across Mount Vernon and other estates.
