Three Warm Season Grasses For Southern Iowa Pastures
Area Soil Conservationist Bob Loudon lists big bluestem Indian grass and switchgrass as the three warm season grasses with pasture potential in southern Iowa. Each favors different soils with bluestem on deep fertile soils Indian grass being more drought tolerant and switchgrass preferring wetter soils. With proper management the period July 1 to September 1 is usable, and stocking rates may target two cows per acre or three yearlings per acre based on limited experience.
