Chinch bugs saved by deep snows in Iowa regions
Iowa State College entomologist Dr. George C. Decker reports the chinch bug population surged after hibernation, but winter mortality rose with less snow. Southern counties saw low die-off due to a persistent snow blanket since Christmas, while northern counties showed rapid increases in mortality as snow cover decreased. If the snow disappears and temperatures fall, mortality could curb the pest, but in many areas enough bugs may persist to threaten wheat and crops next spring unless May or June rains occur. Also noted are local ice skaters Karl Christopher and sons traveling 14 miles from Upper Iowa River to Decorah in about an hour, then returning home.
