In Albia last week the Albia Republican ran a Wanted by Widow ad for a housekeeper for an unincumbered widower. A wrong box number misdirected early replies to Mr C E Jones the milkman. The misaddressed letters caused confusion for Mr Jones and his wife before the error was resolved with the postmaster.

Hastings Shooting Leaves Herring Wounded

A Saturday night Hastings shooting left Herring badly hurt after a dispute with Charles Martin of Sam Knox place South Grove. Martin, angered by the confrontation, fired a shot through the door wounding Herring and was jailed awaiting grand jury proceedings in Hastings. Witnesses largely sympathized with Martin though the act was condemned.

A camp resident from east of town visits Monday on a route from Omaha and drinks heavily. Officer Harris takes him to the city jail after a disorderly scene. In court Judge Hammond suspends sentence, ordering the man to pay costs and return with funds, warning of a harsher fate if he reoffends. The man asks to know where to find his jug, and jokes about a well nearby.
