The Red Ruby Found In Odd Family Tale
A long story from The Youths Companion recounts Gustaf Gillman in Chicago cutting a stone handed by Omaha laborer John Mihok. The rough red pebble, found by Mihok’s father in Hungary, is revealed to be a pigeons blood ruby weighing 23.9 carats, possibly the largest in the United States. Mihok recalls a dream of wealth, while Gillman estimates a value between 100000 and 150000 dollars. The tale links value to reading and scripture.

Farmer weighs cost of extra fertilizer to raise yield
Brown notes that fixed costs stay the same whether corn yields 85 or 125 bushels per acre. He cites about 15 dollars for seed and fertilizer to reach 85 bushels and another 15 dollars could lift yield to 125 bushels, producing roughly 40 extra bushels worth over 50 dollars.
