Pine Bluff Dangers Asks Roosevelt for Levee Cut

Authorities in Pine Bluff appeal to President Roosevelt for permission to cut through government levees and divert the Arkansas River. With the river rising beyond fifteen feet and a crest near twenty six feet, city efforts to reinforce crumbling banks aim to avert catastrophic property damage and possible loss of life while a distant land cut was proposed but federal approval denied. Protective fascine mats of pine and willow are being anchored along weak banks to resist flood forces as the water's rapid rise threatens a large area of land and homes.
