Registration of new cars shows weekly rise in county

County Treasurer F M Robinson reports 16 more license registrations this past week than the prior week. Couples Ray Vanatta and Phyllis Jurgens. Jack Brandt and Rose Mary Swaney. Kenneth Reynolds and Janet Weisenman. Win Leon West and Bernice Hurley, all ages from 15 to 25, obtained licenses in Glenwood, Council Bluffs and Omaha areas.

County Education Conference to Meet This Fall

Mills county plans its first county conference on education to be held early this fall. County Superintendent Amy Hammers will lead a 10 person steering committee. The group meets in Glenwood next Tuesday to organize and aim for a state conference in late October.

Malvern Schools Open Monday With Full Staff

Malvern schools will start Monday with a full staff after Superintendent N. J. Crink confirmed the faculty is complete. Virginia Gourley, newly appointed to the high school math science post, comes from WestMar college and taught at Moville last year. Her husband serves in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed in Iceland. Crink will meet elementary teachers Saturday and high school instructors in the afternoon, with a half day and noon bus dismissal on opening day.

Crawford County Farm Bureau Names New Insurance Agent

Jerry Christensen, long time special agent for Crawford County Farm Bureau at Denison, is employed jointly by Mills County Farm Bureau and Town Farm Bureau to run the insurance department in Malvern. He succeeds Richard Owen who recently resigned to go into business at Glenwood. No date on when Christensen will assume duties.

Huntsman Market Sold to Lorenzes for Sept 1 Takeover

Mr and Mrs Wie Huntsman announce the sale of Huntsman Market to Mr and Mrs Lester Lorenz of Council Bluffs. New owners will assume control on September 1 with the store closed the day before for inventory. The Huntsmans move to Emerson and have uncertain plans.

Hot dry spell worsens Mills County corn outlook

Extreme heat and minimal rainfall dominated Mills County weather as crops shrink under drought. After brief Sunday clouds, no meaningful rain fell. Temperatures exceeded 100 degrees on multiple days with highs around mid 90s to near 100 and nightly lows mainly in the 60s.

Darlene Norton Crowned Queen of District Dairy Show

Darlene Norton, 15, of Strahan community, was chosen queen of the District 4-H Dairy Show in Council Bluffs. She will represent the district at the Ak-Sar-Ben Dairy Show to compete for Ak-Sar-Ben Queen. Mills County Adopts Budget Based on Higher Valuation

Mills County will tax on a taxable valuation of 29,062,446 dollars for the coming year, about 2 percent above last year. Total millage is 20,571 with last year’s valuation at 28,258,378 dollars. Adopted budgets filed with the auditor show increased asks across agencies, including school and town allocations, aided by a new Glenwood grade school project and expanded town incorporations spending.

Early Primary Changes With Minimal Assurance Given

State Senator Henry Washburn and Representative William Ifarbor led a Mills County delegation before the Highway Commission at Ames to push for hardSurfacing Iowa 242 from Silver City to Migdway 34 and to add a farm to market road north to Highway 100. The commission said 242 likely won’t be surfaced before 1947 as funds shift to 100 and 59 through 1956. The group also urged state takeover of the farm to market road, but chairman Lundy noted 1,500 unsurfaced miles remain in the primary system.
