Speculators amassed millions of acres in Iowa before settlers arrived
Iowa City report notes mid 19th century land rush where speculators claimed 12 to 15 million acres plus swamp and internal improvement lands. Absentee owners held over a third of the state as 1853 to 1858 saw loans, bank sums, and huge estates pass through wary hands of Dodge, Jones, Henn, Grimes, and Easley.
