Bill to pension rebel soldiers enters Congress

A bill to pension rebel soldiers has been introduced into Congress. It will likely fail to become law. Governor Stoneman of California named George Hearst to replace the late Senator Miller. A Boone prohibitionist faced threats after saloon closures. The U.S. Senate backed a five member commission to study alcoholic liquor as it relates to revenue, taxation, and broader social effects.

War news on a full sheet sparked the first auxiliary paper

In 1861 Kellogg created an auxiliary paper by combining half sheets from Burraboo with supplements from Madison's Daily Journal. He printed war news on a full sheet, using blank space in his office to add content. The move cut costs while preserving readability amid Civil War reporting and labor perspectives.
