New Tax Rules for Preproductive Agricultural Expenses
Agricultural taxpayers face depreciation options on preproductive costs for items taking over two years to produce. Expensing allows immediate deduction but triggers straight-line depreciation on other assets. capitalizing delays deductions until sale or death, then depreciates. Hog sheep and goats lack a two-year preproductive period. cattle and horses do. Producers should review options with accountants and use inventory or farm-price methods to estimate costs.
