The Madras flour mill opened its second season with a full crew and strong wheat supplies from Crook County. Rail access and improved market conditions are expected to boost daily capacity to seventy five barrels and expand into outside trade, despite early doubts about local flour quality.
Douglas Hood and O. Hedland return from Warm Springs with Indian pictures and a bold tale about a mule that killed a rattlesnake on the Mecca hill. The mule stood its ground as the snake rattled and died after the creature’s head was stepped on. Some quip that the mule could replace snake bite medicine on hunts, while others joke about facing death in the wild with only a mule for protection.
Last week D W Barnett foreclosed a chattel favor from Frank Hipe of A C Sanford. Hipe failed to deliver all mortgaged property and fled by train northward. Sanford obtained a complaint before Judge Jackson. Ward sent deputies to intercept the train. Iman captured him. Barnett returned to the city with Hipe, who was arraigned, released on bond, and the case set for the twenty eighth after a business trip. Two men from Haycreek accompanied by sheep stock buyers joined the scene.
The Board of Directors of Mud Springs School District No. 16 announces school will open Monday next the 23rd with Mrs Joyce Tellefson as instructor.
Mrs. C G Hurt of Madras Oregon brought her 7 year old son to Portland to place him in a grammar school and forgot which school he attended. She sought help from Patrolman Crompton as the child wandered away after school hours. The boy wore a blue serge suit and gray cap, and his exact location was unknown at night.
Students return to town schools as the district notes higher attendance than last opening week. Delayed threshing kept many away. a new room at the school house provides comfortable quarters for grades and high school. Prof Kilgore and teachers express optimism for a successful year.
Stanley Gray secures a lease on Sanford Hall for winter entertainments and dances. First dancing is planned for Friday evening the 27th. This week the transfer of J. E. Bedingfield's house and lot was sold to Mrs. John W. Jones for 800 dollars. Mrs. Jones plans to live in town to be near school facilities for their children.
