A gas flow was found at about 600 feet in the Grizzly well and lit at the surface several times. The flame leaped high, water boiled in the 300 feet of water in the hole, and the drillers expect a significant find as they work through hard shale toward potential oil or gas.
The Socialist County Convention for Crook County Oregon is called to meet at the Circuit Court room in Prineville on Saturday September 17 1910 at 1 PM to nominate candidates for county offices and conduct other business. A speaker of national reputation will address the convention.
Blacksmith Buyke, an Austrian laborer, fled from Officer Weston after being chased from a saloon. He crashed into a barbwire fence, fearfully believing he had been shot as a revolver fired. He was found uninjured aside from smoldering clothes and fined for carrying concealed weapons, with the assault charge dismissed for lack of evidence.
Howard Hilkey a 17 year old youth is jailed in Prineville on a 500 bond charged with horse stealing. He worked with O Kelley’s threshing crew at Culver and borrowed a mare and saddle from Jim Read to ride toward Madras. After reaching Madras he continued south. Read alerted authorities who caught him in Bend after a Friday morning theft. He had a hearing in Prineville and was bound over.
Grand jury reports on a boy from Grants Pass who apparently began a trip home with a horse and saddle he had borrowed, details indicating intention to travel back to his residence.
Joe Johannson blacksmith at Tucker and Culp’s shop was robbed of $2.50 and his watch by two men near the flour mill last Saturday night. One struck him on the head, another searched his pockets as he bit one attacker’s finger to fend them off. Johannson’s mouth filled with blood. the bitten finger may be damaged. Police consider the hand-injured man a person of interest if he appears.
A Sept 15 dispatch reports Metolus Well now 868 feet deep with no new water found since 677 feet. Drilling in a very hard formation slows progress to about five feet per day as crews push toward deeper depths.
W A Hunt Holt Manufacturing Co special salesman says railroad completion to Madras will boost grain farming. predicts sagebrush will disappear as land is cleared and yields rise. He cites wheat yields from 20 to 80 bushels per acre and notes lower future freight costs boosting growers' profits.
An interesting film shown this week at the picture show titled Through the Hood River Valley and Salmon Fishing Along the Columbia River. The films depict apple orchards the gathering and packing and fishermen laying out and hauling in nets to show the great salmon. There is a show every night.
