Chief Engineer Seeks Early Route for Oregon Trunk Line

Chief Engineer George A. Kyle of the Oregon Trunk Line visits Madras to inspect surveys from Willow Creek to the Deschutes and Redmond. Crews plan rapid grading near Crooked River and Trail Crossing as the line aims to reach Madras sooner than expected and possibly extend toward Klamath Country.

Man Killed at Sherars Bridge on Deschutes Construction

The first fatal accident at the Deschutes Bullrout construction occurred at Hastings camp in Deschutes canyon near Grass Valley last Thursday night around 1 o'clock. A. Rowson was sleeping in a tent when the incident happened.

Rock falls from cliff injures boy then dies in Grass Valley

Two other men without warning a large rock fell from a high cliff shore tearing through a tent and striking Mr How von on the left side. The rock fractured his left leg and caused internal injuries. He was taken to Grass Valley railroad hospital, arrived early morning and died at 10:26 a m. He was an English native and 14 years old.

Rival Crews Busy In Des chutes Canyon

Rival railroad contractors Porter Bros and Harriman teams push work along the Deschutes corridor. Porter Bros supply hubs in The Dalles and Shaniko indicate prep for two roads. Borne Jordan crews and Twoby Bros laborers, plus Oregon Trunk and Great Southern shipments, populate a busy warehousing and grading effort.

Prineville Might Win a Railroad Link Says Amin

Amin arrived from The Dalles at the request of Porter Bros. to work for the Pottera in Crooked River Valley and says the route would run from Madras to Burns then to Lakeview and San Francisco. He asserts Prineville will get a railroad, though no surveyors have staked land yet. The town buzzes as Hill plans south of Bend and could map the line to Burns once crews form. If true, Prineville will learn in a week as engineers gather.

Bank for Madras S $ Now Assured

J M Conklin of Portland planned to locate a bank at Madras and left for Portland to buy supplies and equipment. Local capital has subscribed shares at 100 dollars each. Incorporation papers will be filed under Oregon law and the bank should be organized within eight hundred minutes after his return.
