Celebration Progressing Amid Fourth of July Plans

Committees reported progress for the Sanford Hall Fourth of July celebration with $296.50 cash on hand and $50 awaiting collection. Aiming to raise about 400, committees set deadlines, arranged fireworks funds, and planned grounds, music, and a large chorus at the Christian Church. Trains to Madras Set for November Operation

Oregonian notes the DesChutés Railroad under Harriman will run trains into Madras starting November 1 after 21 miles of canyon track. A bridge over a river tributary delays completion, with tunnel and viaduct work ongoing and about 3500 men employed on the project.

Registration of voters commences for state election

Voter registration for the November 8 state election began last Tuesday morning. Justice of the Peace F. J. Brooks will handle registrations in Kutcher Madras precinct. Primary is September 24 with the first registration period ending September 15. Books reopen September 28 and stay open until shortly before the election. All voters must re register this year even if registered two years ago.

Laborer Killed by Dynamite Blast in Deschutes Tunnel

Austrian worker Mike Verkmanovich aged 31 was instantly killed by a dynamite blast in the Callihan tunnel near Sagebrush Springs on the Deschutes Railroad last Thursday evening about 6 30. The foreman was present. the blast mutilated the body. Investigators believe a shot opened a hole for a larger charge and heat from the first explosion triggered the second.

Clerk Enjoys Large Trout on Crooked River Visit

A letter from County Clerk Warren Brown describes a large trout caught near Crooked River by Madras. He recounts a friendly gift of trout to Mr G and a tired return from a dusty trip ending with a warm hotel supper. Married Louis E Wilson to Margaret Bachman with Rev Cantwell officiating at Kingsley Oregon. The couple will reside at the Gamer place south of the German church at Mull.

Railroad Deep Well Drilling Near Madras Sparks Interest

Oregon Trunk and Deschutes divisions push grade work north of Madras as crews, equipment, and horses move through town toward the north. A large well drilling outfit is set to operate on the Dombrowe farm 44 miles south of Madras with a 25 HP steam engine using crude oil as fuel. If water is struck, the wells will supply locomotives on both lines along the Deschutes and Oregon Trunk corridors.
