An oil company reports a new coal vein with potential for prospecting. executives expect to evaluate quantity and quality while planning future testing and development measures.

Deep drilling ordered after coal vein found in Crook county

Madras Oil and Gas Company paused drilling at 150 feet depth when a vein of wood coal was encountered on the Weat slope of Grizzly. Frank Forest, company president, ordered a standard drilling outfit from an Eastern firm via Portland, to arrive in six weeks, with work resuming after heavier machinery is on site to assess coal thickness and potential size.

Linster Sawmill at Bend Destroyed by Fire

A fire last week leveled the Linster sawmill on the Deschutes below Bend, causing about 8000 dollars in loss. Volunteers saved the lumber yard with 15000 dollars of stacked lumber. fire cause unknown but suspected carelessness near pine shavings. Insurance totaled 200, with one 1600 policy expired recently.

Surveyors in the Field Begin Line Work to Shanike

A Bend Bulletin report says a survey crew led by Portland civil engineer Robert Rew has moved from Bend to O Neill to run a line to Shanike. The team, including H F Gault Frank May Max Richardson Harry Smith Jack Hickeen and KR Kelley, totals 11 men and will avoid major surveying over D L & P Co lands using ditch company 10 foot codour surveys. Leland Covert of Redmond joins as the only accompanying official.

Uncle Frank Nichols Returns After 18 Years in Madras

Uncle Frank Nichols of Laidlaw revisits Madras for the first time since settlement begun 18 years ago on Pickett's Island near Deschutes River. He recalls preemption filed, hopes for Central Oregon railroad, and notes continued delay from the Corvallia & Eastern line. Nichols warns settlers against withholding support, doubting Harriman's timely construction.

Grasshoppers Ravage Alfalfa and Gardens Near Pilot Rock

Farmers around Pilot Rock in Umatilla county report severe grasshopper damage this season. Second and third alfalfa cuttings are almost wiped out in places, and many gardens suffer heavy losses. No major damage yet in Pilot Rock proper, but crews from nearby areas are arriving.

Water Strike At Juniper Butte Well

Mrs. A Woodward visited from her Juniper Butte ranch to buy a pump for a recently drilled well by Ivan Hale. Water was found at 32 feet but only two feet remain, and drilling is paused to confirm sufficiency for stock and household use. deeper drilling may follow. Hale has several shallow-water wells in the area with notable success this summer.

Injuries Fatal to Miss Douthit in Portland Streetcar Accident

Miss Mary C. Douthit, formerly of this county, died in Portland on Saturday after being struck by a street car. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J Hi Douthit and sister of Sam and Harry Douthit. A former local teacher, she authored A Souvenir of Western Women, a reminiscences and biographical sketches of pioneers, published around the Lewis and Clark Fair era.

Madras Flour progress noted in Prineville trip

F Dietzel of the Madras Milling Company visited Prineville and nearby towns to promote Madras Flour. He reports the Madras mill ground 40 000 bushels of wheat since last year’s harvest and expects a good wheat crop with quality despite a smaller yield.

Campers Return After Two Weeks in Cascades Hunt

W H Romney J E Campbell and J J Watts with their families return from a two weeks outing in the Cascades. They camped near the big berry patch on the Santiam and during their stay shot eight deer though deer were scarce this season.

Roosevelt to hunt bear in Klamath County Oregon

President Roosevelt plans a bear hunt in Klamath county after his term and before Africa trip. Guide John Dr. Goff will visit in September to study big game districts and advise on hunting the Cascades region for big game and mountain lion.

Governor Currents Bend Irrigation Project Visit

Governor Chamberlain and state officials travel by auto from Shaniko to Bend to inspect Carey Act irrigation work under the State Land Board. The Bend reclamation project uses liens on land rather than title, with board approval required before disposal. Governor and board members have previously toured Crook county.

Professor Fulton Elected Principal at Madras School

Professor P. Fulton of this place has been elected principal of the Madras public school for the ensuing year. He previously led the Prineville School but resigned to join Madras. Fulton has previously served two terms at Madras and last year at Mountain View on Agency Plains. He holds a life certificate and will teach grades 5 through 10 alongside assistants Riley Cook and Miss Clara Horney.

Dispute Over Water Rights Hits Columbia Southern Irrigation Co

J B L Gerking sues the Columbia Southern Irrigation Co, seeking 16000 damages, claiming his land and water right payment plus improvements bring value to 16000, while the company fails to grant clear title and provide adequate water for irrigation on the Deschutes tract.
