Behelberger, a building in this city, is installing cabinet making machinery for a shop in Madras. The facility will produce tables desks and other furniture, offering convenient access to a range of planing and cabinet goods at Robinson gart.
Tillman Reuter the Madras dry farm specialist plans to bring a county fair display and a concurrent Dry Farming Congress exhibit in Colorado Springs. He urges farmers to combine displays for Crook county and proposes a Deschutes Valley regional exhibit with Crook Sherman Wasco counties to attract prizes and homeseekers.
The First Central Oregon Agricultural Association held its annual stockholders meeting at the Commercial Club rooms in Prineville. Wm Boegl G W Russell and J Oliver Powell were elected directors for 1911. The board will include two governor appointees and will meet after appointments to name a president and secretary. The board also decided no spring racing on the grounds to protect the fall fair and Fourth of July events.
Prineville and Eastern Railroad Company formed to build standard gauge railway from Prineville to near Oregon Trunk line westward. Capitalization $100000, largely subscribed locally. 18 mile distance to main line, grade under one percent. Key organizers include Baldwin Booth Cornett Noble LaFollette Noble Stewart. Hillman favored junction site. Madras also mentioned as potential junction.
A proposed railway line would pass near Grizzly and upper Willow Creek and the stock regions of upper Haycreek, presenting a potentially lucrative tonnage while avoiding dense lumber districts. The plan is framed as a high return investment despite terrain and regional considerations.
In Mud Springs near Madras a neighborhood about three by five miles leads in drilled wells. Five wells supply water. Charley Parrish’s well reached 251 feet with 107 feet of water. Cattle calves hogs sheep horses and mules totaled 90,087 8,353 84,681 178,957 and 1,744 respectively. Prices per hundred ranged 617 for steers 521 cows 705 lambs 428 bulls 1020 hogs 545 sheep.
William Holder editor of the Silver Lake Leader died at his home near Paisley on December 11 1910. He was born August 11 1854 and was 56 years old. He formerly edited a Shaniko newspaper before moving to Silver Lake and later burial occurred in Paisley cemetery.
Washington January 5. Board of Army Engineers report on government irrigation projects shows Oregon was underallocated due to influence from other states. Klamath project receives $600,000 of a needed $2.5 million while West Umatilla is funded at zero. Oregon argues it deserves about $6 million plus $6 million more from regular funds, noting its 14 percent contribution to reclamation.
A Oregonian writer assigns Bend Bulletin founding to George P. Putnam but records show the bulletin existed before his involvement. The piece humorously corrects this error and notes Putnam’s acquisition of the paper later. Dorothy Binney of Sound Beach is also mentioned as a fiancée.
Thousands of pounds of black walnut and acorn seed are being shipped by the government from Arkansas to District Forester Chapman in Portland. Forest rangers will plant the seed, and within 25 years Oregon is expected to have abundant hardwoods for furniture making and other uses.
