A playful verse contrasts a child’s naughty tricks with a father’s past mischief. The speaker imagines light misdeeds such as painting Sunday clothes and pestering animals, wondering what dads did as boys and whether such acts shaped their restraint.
The Hood River Glacier and Dalles Chronicle recount Wasco County’s enormous original area as of January 11, 1854, when roughly all Oregon east of the Cascades was included. It traced boundaries to the 46th parallel, the Snake River, and the 42nd degree, later reduced by Oregon statehood and territorial realignments that created Washington and Idaho.
The Madras Literary Society was organized in the schoolhouse last Friday evening. Debate on nature versus man’s works drew several speakers. Officers elected for three months: President Prof. Fulton, Vice President Miss Jessie Isham, Secretary Charles Bye, Treasurer J C Kaas, Sergeant at Arms Mary Alberta Yoouloge. A constitution and by laws were adopted and meetings set bi weekly at the Madras school house.
Albert J Hennemann of Method at Hill and Minute Miller of Hubbard Oregon married at high noon January 26 1905 at the bride's parents home Hubbard. Best man Frank Brnestd and bridesmaid Misa Katherine Heme nane. After a dinner and reception the couple left for Portland and Shanika then Madrasa where they settled on the groom's homestead eight miles southwest of Madrasa.
Rev Father Hickey of Wasco Oregon invites Catholics near Madras and Willow Creek to contact him with name and address, family size and baptism status, desire to practice faith, distance from Madras, and nearest town. He promises to assist isolated Catholics and respond once replies arrive, also inviting Protestant inquiries.
A group of Madras businessmen and farmers circulates a petition asking the Post Master General to establish a mail route from Heisler Station via Madras Laidlaw Cline Falle to Bend. Over sixty names are on the list. If approved, the route would shave twelve to twenty hours from outgoing and incoming mail service, ending the current twenty hour Madras delay at Grizzly and filling a long felt need.
Opal Prairie items report Henry and Sam Davis lay a new fence line along the county road. L T Dam ceases blacksmithing as a side job. Kelley Messinger and Mrs. Davis travel to Crooked River to visit family. William Killingbeck rents the McCallister place two miles north of Culver and begins plowing 60 acres. D H Putman clears sage brush. Albert Yokem attends the Literary event for the first time in months due to a broken leg. Walter Messinger travels to his Lamonta area and returns with grain for farming on Opal Prairie. Juniper.
