Harriman and Hill lines continue work despite severe weather. Deschutes and Oregon Trunk Line contractors push camps, blasting and rock through Willow Creek canyon toward Madras. Officials predict trains reach Madras by late next summer as Willow Creek bridge construction begins.
Four Italian laborers were seriously injured in a dynamite explosion near the Calahan construction camp below Porter Spring canyon. The blast occurred while workers prepared charges for a tunnel project to divert a creek. Two men near the third charge were severely injured, one fatally likely, others cut and bruised. Medical aid arrived from Madras and Grass Valley hospital arrangements were made.
Heavy snow and record low temperatures sweep through the area. Four inches more fell yesterday, bringing total since Friday to over 25 inches, with temperatures dropping to 25 below and freight rates rising to a dollar per hundred. Mail service remains delayed as merchants face shortages and transport challenges.
Five men pleaded guilty to selling intoxicating liquors in a dry precinct in Wasco County. Frank Wolever Tony Silva H C Nichols George Kne bal and L Darby paid the $900 in fines in Justice J A Douthit's court Friday morning. The Bend area sees shifting surveying crews on the Oregon Trunk Line project. J J Stacer leads a new Bend crew tying into Wakefield line near the Central Oregon canal and pushing north east of Pilot Butte. Wakefield moves to Wet Weather Springs as crews locate a line through lava area between Lava Butte and the river. A large camp at Crooked E River crossing supports growing Oregon Trunk activity. Grading on the Harriman line north of Madras accelerates with contracts winding down canyon work and shifting sites southward. Calahan expects six miles through Trout Creek rock to take 18 months. completion on Harriman line to Madras eyed by mid summer next year.
The Deschutes Valley display won a silver cap at the Dry Farming Congress in Billings Montana. The Great Northern offices in Portland reported awards for Oregon Oregon/Washington central Oregon products including alfalfa seed from Prineville and oats from Bend Madras and Culver with Hill prize cash and silver caps. The notice also lists awards to Tiltian Reuter Madras and a second prize for neat display with a G Ryan ribbon.
