Horace C Newcoms died at his Indianapolis home last Wednesday after a long illness. He was a skilled lawyer and longtime political editor of the Indianapolis Journal. At his death he served as a commissioner of the Supreme Court.
St Louis judge H D Laughlin threatened retaliation over an insult from Stanley Waterloo editor of the Chronicle. After weighing risks he concluded Waterloo was a mere obstacle and chose to keep his seat in the criminal court rather than risk a fatal confrontation.
A convict named Frank Messersmith from Marion county tried to cut his throat with a pen knife at Michigan City prison. After the knife was removed, he attempted to tear out his windpipe through the wound. He had nine months remaining in his sentence.
