Hanover College trustees praised President W A Millis for expanding the student body and improving the institution. The wartime leader is described as patriotic and influential, guiding 136 students into the army with more expected to follow.
Lieut. G. Francis Patton, awarded the French war cross for actions in Picardy, sacrificed his gas mask to treat the wounded. He saved many lives before the gas took its toll and he was hospitalized. He has now fully recovered.
Indisputable evidence shows a German submarine shelled a lifeboat carrying Carolina survivors, found by the Danish ship Brysell off Cape May. Thirty-six crew members from the Texel, carrying 42,000 bags of sugar, were torpedoed near New York and reached port after a perilous swim. The City of Columbus is deemed safe, while secrecy surrounds naval measures to protect Atlantic shipping. A mine was reportedly found by a U S sweeper off the Delaware capes, adding a new twist to the submarine threat.
In Lewes Delaware today nineteen passengers of the missing steamship Carolina were landed by a British vessel. The fate of the other 211 passengers remains unknown. Two of the landed passengers were women. Boston reports official verification of City of Columbus arrival at Vineyard Haven. An American tank steamer crippled after a U boat encounter was towed into Atlantic Port with hull punctured and water taken aboard.
Miss Hoffstadt travels by morning train to Lafayette for a Purdue University conference of club leaders and vocational teachers. Her Purdue program topic is Some Cooperating Agencies in Club Work as she begins a new season leading University Extension Clubs with a larger membership. More than fifty Madison children receive free supervision in canning gardening and sewing. Mrs. Mary Brown and Miss Anna Chadwell plan a Friday trip to Camp Taylor to visit Corporal Joseph Skidmore, ill with pneumonia since last September but now improving.
Paris reports American reinforcements join the Aisne Marne front north and south of the river. Units under General Poch attack German detachments crossing the Marne at Jaulgonne, driving them back and destroying bridges. Germans suffer heavy losses and hundreds are captured as American and French forces counter attack near Neath.
Edna Payne granted a divorce from Chiude A L Payne in a venue change case and restored to her maiden name Edna West. Gertrude O Neal’s case against John T O Neal dismissed. State v George Spencer from Jennings County—pleaded not guilty and bond set at 100 dollars with 13 50 monthly for two minor children. Raymond Willick, son of Mrs. Pauline Willick, was struck by a car around nine this morning while alighting from a street car. The fender touched him and he got up quickly, continuing to a picnic at Bersch's grave. the driver is described as a country resident.
The cattle tick alone is said to cause more than $300,000,000 in losses each year, highlighting its toll on livestock industries and farm economics.
Washington reports forty new names on the casualty list for today. The War Department also released thirty officers and men formerly listed as missing now identified as prisoners of war. Included is Fred Wickman of Logootec Indiana.
New York reports German submarines U-151 and U-153 are operating along the US coast after departing Kiel April 20 with orders to stay until August. A prisoner aboard U-151, Enoch Roker, says more submarines will follow to the war’s end. Also noted are letters from Flying Cadet Raymond E Crozier, son of Hon. and Mrs. Crozier, showing his health and plans to train in California before likely heading to France.
At First Baptist church a small audience heard temperance lecturer Mrs Elizabeth Standley discuss women’s roles in supporting the war effort. She focused on WCTU work and its benefits to national goals, noting many strong points and regretting the crowd’s small size.
Rev H W Baldridge former pastor of Grace M E Church Madison now in Lawrence Ind dedicates a new church there. The $10 000 structure was built with his hard work and faithful service. Old friends in Madison celebrate his success in Lawrence.
A Hanover evening crowd attended the Senior class play It Pays To Advertise last night. The young cast delivered a clever comedy with well sustained parts and unique costumes winning audience admiration.
Hanover College held its annual board meeting at the Hotel Jefferson with President Millis reporting strong finances and wartime spirit. Trustees heard 136 students in military service and praised the college community's patriotism as committees were formed for forthcoming reports.
Mrs Taylor H Potter died at three this morning after a brief paralysis illness. Her maiden name was Mary Lucker, daughter of the late John and Mary Lucker. She was forty five, wife of Mr Potter who died May 17. Surviving children include Taylor Jr Arthur Frederick Bradford Albert LeRoland all in this city and Mrs Alice Beachout Indianapolis Mrs William Peddie and Miss Nelda Potter here. Funeral plans to be announced.
Floyd Dalhouver infant son of Mr and Mrs Adam Dalhouver died at their West Fifth Street home. He was born May 26 1918 and will be buried tomorrow at 8 30 am in St Patrick Cemetery. The parents receive sympathy from many friends.
