After eighteen hours the jury in State of Indiana vs Elza McIntire reported to Judge Griffith they were hopelessly deadlocked on the charge of rape involving 15 year old Ethel Hash of Lancaster township. Initial ballots favored acquittal seven to five with multiple instructions sought on reasonable doubt. The case, alleged to have occurred last fall during a visit to Lancaster township, drew defense by Fred McCallister and Thomas Boo McGregor and state attorneys Wallace Cotton Judge Bear and Curtis Marshall.
