FPWARDSVILLE ILL Dec 14 1865 county superintendent presents two year term report for Madison County from Oct 1 1863 to Sept 30 1865. Notes sixteen whole and eight fractional townships total land area 457 017 acres. General statistics list several figures for population and land use.
A fragmented OCR entry lists total sums and individual line items for teachers wages in the county. Amounts include figures like 13 195 91 6101 and various smaller sums corresponding to different schools or districts. Concludes with a note that the item continues on the eighth page.
In New Bedford Massachusetts police court last week Mary E Haskell aged fifteen was charged with bigamy by her sister after marrying Ira Maskins in October while her first husband Charles J Haskell lived The defense argued the girl had married at thirteen without her mother's consent and had no intention to live with Haskell again The court noted reports claim a twelve year old can consent to marriage and ordered bail of 300 for her March appearance at superior court at Launton The complainant was reportedly taken to the brother of her sister s former husband both of whom had been imprisoned for shopbreaking in Westport
A medical note from Lall's Journal of Health explains that croup inflammation requires cooling the throat area. It recommends placing hot water in cloths on the throat and chest, with multiple flannels kept warm, covered, and dry, to draw heat and soothe the patient until symptoms ease.
The Pond du Lac Press recalls a landlord's cruel question to a widow seeking a home how many children have you. She answers that her children are all in the graveyard and is promptly rented the house, turning the tables on the landlord.
An explosion at Logansport Indiana on the 14th instant killed four children who were playing nearby. Mrs Lydia Scott of Newport Rhode Island was fatally burned when a kerosene lamp exploded. She cried for help as flames enveloped her. A domestic who had the infant in her arms dropped the infant to seek aid and flames were smothered by a Fort Adams soldier’s coat. Mrs Scott died at ten thirty in the evening. the six week old infant survived.
In a Nashville hospital during surgery a wounded Union soldier lost his right arm. As he awoke he mourned the missing limb yet vowed the sacrifice would keep the nation whole. He told the stump that he had paid his share for Freedom and Union with his heart.
