Monotony in a Gubernatorial Stump Speech
In Illinois, during a Republican ticket era, Oglesby Ward and Prentiss joined Bross on a statewide tour. Prentiss plotted to disrupt Bross by having Ward and Prentiss open a town meeting and imitate Bross’s stale oration. The ruse backfired when Bross departed, and Prentiss telegraphed for the remaining train section to sleep in the sleeping car, leaving the others to finish the night’s journey.
