Columbus September 2 Governor Cox in a speech at a National Board of Farm Organization meeting declared that if elected he would appoint dirt farmers to top government jobs. He named Secretary of Agriculture and members of the federal and regional reserve boards and the interstate commerce commission among those to be filled by farmers.
W H Dowry prominent Peorian died in an auto accident near Venona while en route to the State American Legion convention in Chicago. His companions Homer Gleason post commander and Harold Shradski survived uninjured as investigations point to a steering gear failure. Dowry was the son of W W Dewey, a member of the board of trade and grain commission.
The Yocum sisters twins and Kay Bell of Bushnell were arrested and held to await Sheriff Sapp and Deputy Wilson. They left home recently and their mother had urged authorities in many cities to look for them. They arrived home this morning. more details were not available at press time.
Chicago reports the Senate committee investigating campaign expenditures adjourned shortly after noon without hearing Edmund Moore of Ohio, Governor Cox's personal representative. Chairman Keynon announced a meeting next Tuesday to hear more witnesses and continue the inquiry.
Warsaw report says Bolshevik forces under Gen Rudenny were annihilated in operations from Aug 29 to Sept 1. The leading cavalry commander and his troops are reported isolated and in disorder amid the fighting in the Lemberg sector.
London septembre 2 Terrence Mac Sweney Lord Mayor of Cork was reported to be much weaker this morning though still bright. The sudden weakness developed last night and was offset by two hours of fitful sleep.
Officers and cadets from the Spanish naval vessel Alphonso XIII arrived in New York for a courtesy visit. They will be guests of the navy department in Washington.
Belfast Sept 1 Fighting resumed between Sein Feinners and union shipyard workers from Shank Hill district and troops. Heavy firing lasted about half an hour before Sein Feinners were dislodged by an armored car.
Belfast on September 2 reports drizzle shielding troops as rioters clash. The death toll rose to 27 overnight. A soldier was shot by comrades while pursuing a sniper, and snipers opened fire on a dense crowd wounding a civilian. Panic spread in parts of the city.
Miss Dorothea Vance departed this morning for Galesburg to visit several days and then proceed to Oquawka where she has been hired to teach the first and second grades this coming year.
The large scale committee for anthracite miners and operators met in Scranton on September 2 to draft a two year contract detailing coal commission awards approved by President Wilson. Reports say one to two thirds of miners in the anthracite field are idle in protest.
Mrs Margaret Logan purchased from Alonzo Cushma of Plymouth a property at 320 West Chase Street for 1100 dollars. Possession is to be given at once.
County Superintendent B E Decker reports the boys state fair at Springfield on Saturday was the largest and best yet. Kenneth Pennington of Industry and Carl Clark of Scotland township earned valuable instruction and found the school worthwhile. Weather was cool at first but did not deter the boys.
Charles Sawyer sells the John Yeast farm just north of Good Hope to Frank Bacon for 450 dollars per acre. Bacon already owns the 80 acres to the west, and the combined tracts will form one of the county’s best farms.
The County Farm Bureau picnic at Waterworks Park tomorrow draws attendees from across the county and neighboring areas. Howard Leonard of the Illinois Agricultural association and executive committee member of the American Farm Bureau Federation will speak after dinner, sharing insights from a western tour on cooperative marketing. Beth Clark, Illinois Agricultural association executive committeeman for the 14th district, will speak before dinner about grain marketing plans. Athletic contests with cash prizes are organized by the picnic committee.
Rodman Grigsby of Blandinsville after purchasing Inter-State Oil holdings at sheriff sale plans a fine auto filling station on the Davis livery barn lot. The building will feature a waiting room office lavatory toilets hardwood floors and quality furniture. Construction runs while Grigsby studies at St John’s Military Academy Delafield Wis with personal supervision planned in spring.
