Landowners and tenants in Me Donough county hold two days of meetings to boost profitability for both sides. Tenants met in circuit court room to discuss plans and service to farm owners, while landlords held a separate session. A joint meeting is slated for November 22.
Four major meat packers Armour Swift Wilson and Cudahy tell plant councils to consider wage cuts to boost near term efficiency. Amalgamated Meat Cutters union previously authorized a walkout if no satisfactory agreement is reached. Armistice Day closes city post office at 9 30 a m with limited mail service and desk delivery only from 9 to 9 30 a m.
Deputy Sheriff J. E. Wilson reports only two pieces of the original 1872 court house furniture survive. A walnut sheriff's desk eight by four feet includes a deep filing cabinet and numerous drawers. The other survivor is the massive circuit court judges desk. most other pieces have been replaced over time.
The Olympia arrives on the Potomac with 21 gun salutes from North Dakota and Washington forces to honor the Unknown Soldier. The casket will be transferred at the dock to a khaki guard, then escorted to Arlington with full ceremony and a dirge.
James M. Pace Republican will become postmaster of Macomb tomorrow morning succeeding Democrat Richard J. Simmons who signaled his departure seven months ago. Inspectors from the post office department are checking government property and accounts today and will finalize the turnover later. The Macomb selection follows a GOP factional clash between McCormick Sherman Brundage Lowden and Small Thompson groups reflecting broader Illinois politics. Simmons leaves a record of diligent service and expanded post office duties including parcel post. He has not chosen his next occupation but will seek a well earned rest for a time.
Washington reports Representative Johnson Republican of South Dakota a former army officer says he has no proof of charges but believes soldiers deemed traitors cowards or mentally unfit were shot by their own comrades while facing the enemy. In a separate item delivery team owned by Chandler Bros grocers bolted from their store on Lafayette Street causing minor damage but no injuries.
