Burglary Suspect Strikes Macomb Homes in Rain

Jail Empty After Prisoner Escape at McDonough County

For the first time since the escape of prisoners from the McDonough county jail last fall the sheriff Sapp's home is the only occupied building. The jail has been empty for a week since the last inmate was moved to a state institution. Prior to the escape the jail never remained empty during Sheriff Sapp's term. Although the jail is empty law breakers are welcome if they choose to stay elsewhere.

Disease Kills Adair Cattle in Acute Outbreak

Affected herds near Adair report 12 yearling steers owned by Guy Woods and 2 or 3 cattle belonging to Walter Blandsfield dying since Monday from a tremorhemic septicemia-like disease. Dr. Gray notes it is the same illness that killed cattle at McDonough County farm last year. Vaccination has begun for the living stock. dead animals were burned and farms are not quarantined.

Heavy Rain Widespread Across County With Local Intensity

Heavy rain covered much of the county last night though amounts varied. The central north to south strip saw the strongest downpour, especially near Industry. Macomb area residents report record rainfall, while the west and southeast saw little or only a shower. An electrical storm caused no damage.

Gilson May 24 Miss Blythe Boydston graduates from Gilson High School after eleven years with perfect attendance and punctuality. She is the first student to leave such a record since the school was built. Reavens Studio owner Cardon V. Burnham returns from a winter Lyceum Bureau tour and will reopen his studio in Macomb teaching Wednesdays Fridays and Tuesdays.

Peace Conference Declined by Illinois Mine Operators

Springfield May 25. President Frank Farrington announced the district executive committee unanimously refused to meet coal operators over wage scale. Letters will inform the three operators associations the district will not engage until the international union policy changes. The operators proposed a separate wage agreement with Illinois miners, opposed by the United Mine Workers of America.

Shell Hits Tree Wounds Captain. 3 Soldiers Killed

Three enlisted men were killed and three soldiers plus one officer wounded when a shell struck a tree and exploded during target practice at Camp Bragg range. Captain M A Dawson of Battery E 5th Artillery was injured. the others were from the same regiment.

Worker in Powder Mill Dies in Blast

Alton and East Alton authorities report C. E. Tess, 39, of Glassford Illinois, an operator at the Equitable Power Co. plant, was instantly killed at 8 30 this morning when the Corning mill used to break powder cakes into granules exploded. Tess was alone in the mill. investigators seek the cause of the first plant blast in two years.
