A blaze at the Hanan Lum Yard caused damage estimated at five thousand dollars. Fire crews battled the flames, suppressing the fire and preventing spread to adjacent structures. No injuries were reported.
Fire swept through the Hanan Lumber yard and nearby barns destroying several structures and valuable contents. Total loss exceeds two thousand dollars with roofing and harness also ruined. An adjuster and insurance payment were anticipated while officials investigated a yet unknown cause.
A committee in Colchester approves an August 10 picnic at a site used for miners gatherings, run by the Farmers Picnic Association. Funds solicitations cover sixteen district reps, with A K Freer as secretary treasurer and prizes for contests. Plans include baseball, concerts, and an address by a notable speaker. Also, American Legion meeting set for 7 30 tonight.
President Harding laid a wreath on the coffin of a WWI soldier at Ho bokken army piers while Mrs Harding wept and a crowd of 5,000 mourners watched. He spoke of sorrow and the hope that war may not return, as flags draped coffins and a plaque noted Private Joseph Guyton’s death in 1918. An unrelated luncheon speech followed amid notes of fiscal reform. Two vehicle collisions in Davenport, Iowa, damaged a Ford taxi and a touring car with no reported driver details.
Judge Robert Grier issued two rulings against William A. Compton in favor of the Morrow family, upholding a decree requiring repayment of 4267 with five percent interest. The Morrows alleged fraudulent behavior in stock exchanges and land sales, while Mrs. Brown claimed similar funds. Court adjourned after the day’s business.
Irvin Crabb was arrested last night on West Adams street for driving with his car cut out open. He paid a 5.00 fine with costs before Justice Falkenthal this morning. Police vow to curb noisy cut outs.

Madison officials discount Governor Len Small of Illinois claim that Wisconsin highway chief A R Hirst is allied with the Portland Cement Association. Small says Illinois will adopt cement or change road specs unless the trust is broken and proposes a Midwest governors conference to shield taxpayers from profiteering cement interests.
Executive committees from Grand Army and Woman's Relief Corps plan a joint Memorial Day event in Macomb with services at the Christian church on Sunday May 29 and Monday May 30. Rev Cole to preach. A T Stewart to marshal the parade with autos between the cemetery and rink.
