Officials warn residents that personal taxes are payable now not after May first. The office of the assessor reports steady collection with $11,366.75 received so far and notes real estate tax due through March and April. Delinquent lists are expected to be short as township collectors have largely met their targets.
Detroit police and city officials issued a warning after a series of stolen auto cards surfaced in the night. The notes claim “son of an automobile” and reference rewards. Detectives seek leads as several cards appeared since Saturday amid a rash of similar incidents.
At the Macomb Commercial association a meeting is called for all merchants tonight at 8 o clock to discuss an outdoor advertising scheme proposed by a Retail Merchants Bureau committee. The session, led by J A Miner and committee members, urges full attendance to discuss, exchange ideas, and take action on the proposal.
The Buckeye and Western Stoneware Plant 4 in Macomb restart production after a two month shutdown. About a hundred workers previously idle are recalled as orders begin to flow in, signaling improving business conditions. Western Stoneware also operates a Monmouth plant with production resuming elsewhere pending orders.
John Chapman and Sons painters and decorators move into their new quarters today in the building erected by Olaf Anderson between the former Helms meat market and the shoe shop on West Jackson street.
Roy son of Mr and Mrs Ed Graves left yesterday afternoon for Chicago where he has a position in the Northwestern Railroad terminal.
Mrs. Jessie Golm formerly of Augusta dies at 429 South Randolph Street from heart trouble after years of illness. Coroner Russler summoned for inquest. Burial planned in Augusta with funeral details to follow.
The Fourteenth Judicial district prepares for a Democratic convention in Macomb on March 15 with over one hundred delegates. Justice Floyd E. Dublin reports George Clancy of Limerick shot and killed at his home and his wife wounded. Michael O Callaghan, former mayor, was also killed at his residence. Suffered broken ankle. Longs McCourt arrives from Breckenridge Texas hobbling on crutches after fracturing ankle at an oil well job. He will recuperate at his mother Mrs Katherine Mc Court's home on West Jackson Street.
The McDonough County Tier Cubosig Association will meet on Tuesday at 4 30 PM in the library of the Macomb clinic for their afternoon gathering.
Sparks falling from burning out flues prompted two fire alarms in the last 24 hours. No major damage occurred. The first call came from 617 South Randolph street Sunday night around 9. A rain dampened roof prevented a fire. A small hole burned in a knot at Worley Frakes residence on West Woodbury street when the chimney burned out after paper was placed in the stove.
In Petersburg Illinois on March 7 James Cooper stabbed his wife Maude Cooper 37 as she lay sick. He then attacked her brother Walter Sewell wounding him eight times before police subdued him. The motive appears jealousy of the wife’s relatives. Cooper, owner of a Pekin broom factory, is jailed on murder charges.
A bicycle found by police on East Jackson street near the square was claimed by Howard Bussert. The By-Stander classified ads again prove their value in locating owners.
London reports Allied troops will march into Duisburg Duesseldorf and Ruhrport tomorrow to enforce reparations penalties. The plan includes taxing German imports and establishing an Allied controlled Rhine customs boundary. Lloyd George says Germany’s proposals are insufficient for a permanent settlement and no peace while proposals fail to meet terms.
