A heated session concluded in a tie as members debated key issues this week. Officials and attendees remained at the table through a lengthy discussion, signaling ongoing disagreements on the proposed measures.
Delegates in San Francisco start the day as a fight over the party platform unfolds. A committee report on five planks including Ireland and world peace is read amid expected clashes on a wet plank and Ireland recognition. Bryan seeks to renew the floor battle while Wilson supporters back League of Nations.
San Francisco July 2. Senator Glass began reading the proposed platform at 56 words a minute. The document exceeds 5000 words and is expected to last about an hour and forty minutes. The suffrage plank sparked a big demonstration led by women delegates with Tennessee Florida and North Carolina standards raised on the floor. The platform committee readiness prompted expectations of a long floor grind with William J Bryan ready to fight for or against planks and a prohibition plank. Leaders anticipate a lengthy debate with thirty minute limits per speaker as delegates grow impatient awaiting action.
Macomb relief came as Central Illinois Public Service Company kept lights on through a severe thunderstorm. Upgrades between Macomb and Colchester improved insulators, reducing outages, while plans for a wireless system aim to bolster reliability during future storms. Meanwhile county bridge and culvert projects proceed with multiple crews repairing and building structures across Bethel Tennessee Eldora and surrounding townships.
Dr Allen Sells cattle from the Macomb clinic farm near Augusta shipping 102 head of fat cattle to the Chicago market in the past two or three weeks. At current prices the shipment is worth about $20,000.
Frank McDaniel of Plymouth collapsed after exposure to high heat while working at his nephew Everett McDaniel’s home in the Scott neighborhood. He was treated for heat illness and remained very ill.
The Macomb post office will close at 10 a.m. Monday, ending normal service for the day. This temporary shutdown affects patrons needing mail processing and the public window.
G M Hitchcock will observe Independence Day with no mail delivery or rural route collection today. Residence districts in town receive desk delivery from 9:80 to 10:00 am. Usual morning delivery and a 5:00 pm collection operate in the business district. all mails dispatched on regular schedules.
McDonough county suffered an overnight rainstorm with strong winds causing scattered damage. Wheat and rye twisted, corn bent, and some trees felled in Macomb, though overall losses appear limited to ruined potatoes and minor structural impact. Weatherman A A Messmore cites 1.46 inches of rain and compares recent June totals.
J L Bristow the local manager is transferred from Macomb to join General Superintendent William F Gill man with headquarters in Springfield. Theodore Brandt now local superintendent at Mt Sterling and nearby towns may move to the local plant as promotions reshape the staff over the next two to three weeks. Bristow leaves behind many friends and the city faces ongoing utility service tensions. his departure is met with regret though he is wished success.
Chicago hosts the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks July 5 to 10. Hotel information bureau guarantees room to any caller and catalogs about 15,000 available, with downtown capacity 50,000 to 60,000 plus outlying hotels for up to 100,000. Wild west sports and a July 7 parade highlighted by an Elks convention in the auditorium.
D. E. Gallagher, a South Johnston Street grocer, has installed a new curbside gasoline service station. An underground tank of large capacity feeds the pump, serving Fourth Ward suburbanites and others who will obtain fuel for their cars.
Oil men working for P. E. Elting and partners on Dr. I. M. Martin farm near Fountain Green have drilled 640 feet without finding oil. The crew expects to begin operations at another location on the Appagy property soon.
