A roof spark started a fire shortly before 8 this morning at a tenant house owned by Herman and Stocker two doors east of the library on East Jefferson street. The blaze burned a small hole a few inches in diameter and was put out with chemicals. The resident is cared for by the K. P. Suttle family and Mrs Kate McDonald.
Hattiesburg Mississippi January 27 The Girault Motor Company was robbed of 180000 in bonds paper and notes this morning by two men who held up the clerk letting the bandits escape with the loot and the police seek suspects.
In San Francisco on January 97 the defense rested today in the second trial of nine men slaughter case against Rosene Arhnckle. A witness testified and the jury heard closing arguments from both sides during the heated trial.
A noon fire on the roof of the Adair Hotel threatened the structure but volunteer firefighters extinguished the flames. A spark from the flue likely started the blaze, which burned a substantial roof section. Proprieter Joe Dunblazier operates the hotel.
J I Dunkle of Berwick awoke to a burglar inside his Des Moines area store and fired a single shot killing the intruder. The store had been robbed twenty two times over two years and Dunkle had begun sleeping in the shop after a prior break in.
City Judge A B Fuhr proposes creating fake dramatic events to fill daily editions. He suggests exaggerating minor leaks and closings to simulate a flood and flood the paper with sensationalism, a plan deemed impractical by reporters and editors.
County and city school superintendents from McDonough and nearby western Illinois counties gather February 2 and 3 at Western Illinois State Teachers College for lectures, class visits, round tables, and discussions led by State Superintendent F G Blair and aides on topics from one room schools to consolidation, pension funds, and Educational Commission recommendations.
Coroner Homer Blodgett presided over two inquests in Plymouth, returning verdicts of death from heart failure for Mrs. W. A. Smith age 59 and William Six age 66. Mrs. Smith was found lifeless by her husband after two morning checks. Six was found in bed at his daughter’s home. Surviving relatives include Ed. Roger and Mrs. William Sweat. Funeral plans for Mrs. Smith and interment for Six were noted. The same jury conducted both inquiries, with members H. L. Bidwell, Z. T. Bickford, Henry Long, Fred L. Smith, L. R. Phelps and John Markee.
James Gossage and Hiram Frakes pleaded guilty in county court to possessing liquor and were fined 100 dollars plus 25.80 costs each. both fines paid. Ed Hainline, released on 500 dollar bail, is believed to have jumped his bond and has not been seen since.
In Chicago on January 26, over 90 percent of striking packing-house workers voted to continue the walkout that has been in effect since December. The stoppage affects major plants and reflects ongoing labor tension in the industry.
