A man named Ward shoots Mrs. Flossie Moore in Rushville after a dispute near Pleasant View. He then fatally shoots himself in a schoolhouse south of Pleasant View. Coroner's inquest to be held, with Ward’s former companion a key focus, as residents recount a long troubled history.
The report describes a man named Ward who shot his wife after tensions from a prior failed divorce and Moore’s return from the army. Jealousy over the wife's renewed attention to her husband sparked the violence. Three bullets hit the woman in the head and side, Ward’s body later moved to Robert Lawler parlors in Rushville. Ward had reportedly threatened Mrs Moore in recent months over her indifference.
Fred Kingdon a English native and Bushnell resident was granted U S citizenship in circuit court Tuesday. He read The By Stander and The Chicago Herald Examiner as part of proving his eligibility. Also Nathan Levin of Sciota born in 1880 in Russia Poland was granted citizenship with six children.
A two year old, Robert Garland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Garland, fell into a kettle of scalding mash prepared for chickens. He was treated at home by Dr. Jenkins and later admitted to Phelps hospital. Dr J C Foley notes 21 deaths from tuberculosis and advocates a sanatorium.
P A Franklin, president of the International Mercantile Marine, testified at a shipping board inquiry that the 1903 contract with Britain had no bearing on American registered tonnage. He challenged claims of British policy harm and presented stock lists showing American ownership. Federal troops guard courts in Matewan murder trial as Judge Bailey overrules quash motions and trial proceeds with 24 defendants pleading not guilty.
The By-Stander appeals to drivers to reduce noise on West Adams street as several days of loud cutouts and horns disturb Alderman S. B. Howcard who is critically ill. If unresolved, the street may be roped off a block around the councilman's residence.
Mrs. J. B. Sanborn wife of the commander of the 181st Infantry 33 division died of heart disease at Evanston today. She had been in ill health for some time. Beside General Sanborn she is survived by two daughters.
George Stoneking Jr., once of Macomb, is jailed in Rushville on charges of stealing T. M. Lee's car two years ago. He was moved from Anamosa Iowa after finishing a term in the State Reformatory. Roy Cline, Stoneking’s partner, was captured at Galesburg and returned to the county. authorities cite joint guilt and note Cline hails from Schuyler County.
A special meeting of Rushville Presbytery was held in Carthage yesterday. Rev. A. E. Arnfield, former Clayton pastor, was dismissed to the Presbytery of St. Joseph Mo. Rev. R. Washington Barton was installed as pastor at Carthage with Rev. J. R. Vance presiding. Sermon by Rev. Dennis Mason. Charge to the pastor by Rev. O. D. Slater and to the people by Rev. George C. Crockatt.
Associated Press reports from Springfield on January 27 that many Illinois farmers will adopt formal farm bookkeeping and business practices by year end. Farm adviser M. L. Mosher notes the era of haphazard farming is ending as more farmers maintain farm books and use financial planning to guide operations.
Farmers shift focus to lines of work they fit best. Woodford county farm bureau and state bureaus distribute four years of farm accounts free to members and offer bookkeeping help. Advisers will visit farms to inspect books and guide accounts.
A blaze at the Pullman Car Co freight car erecting shop in Chicago destroyed seven freight cars and twelve wagons. Vice president J B Weaver estimated the loss at 450000 dollars.
Springfield January 27 six new sleeping sickness suspects include W Newton Bates secretary of the Illinois Country club and grandson of General Ben Bates. Additional cases were reported at Mt Pulaski Maywood and three in Chicago signaling wider spread in the state.
The C I P Co light rate hearing to be continued February 15 at Springfield includes Macomb among the interested municipalities. Mayor C W Flack says City Attorney Switzer represented Macomb at the prior session and other area representatives attended. Little could be accomplished to defeat the rate increase.
Wickliff Crenshaw the alleged slayer of Bud Langford at the Carthage fair last year has been granted a writ of superseders and will probably be released while his case is in the hands of the supreme court to which it was appealed after he was found guilty in circuit court in Hancock county. Bonds of $10,000 was asked.
A large turnout attended the Pleasant Social at St Pauls school auditorium last night as part of a series. The event featured board games in the early evening and a dance with a five piece orchestra. Card prize winners were Mrs Arthur Dougherty, Ralph Weather and Charles Sullivan.
Cleveland January 27 Rail unions proposed moving 50 million bushels of wheat and corn at no cost to Herbert Hoover to aid relief efforts for hungry nations in Europe and China. Chief executives of the large railroad brotherhoods pledged the men’s labor without charge.
Kelly Wagle pleaded guilty to assault before Circuit Judge Waggoner. He was fined 100 dollars plus costs and released from bond. William D. Henrichson was granted a divorce on grounds of desertion, the plaintiff represented by George Falder. A burglary case against Mr. and Mrs. John Carnes was continued. Grand jury praised jail, urged reforms. Claude H. Black won a 325 dollar judgment against James E. Bennett Co. and Sidney C. Fleugel. Street case arguments over Ward street closing continued before Judge Waggoner.
The Rev. Dr. William T. Manning was elected bishop of New York on the third ballot at a special diocesan convention, succeeding the late Bishop Birch. An editorial in the Hearst newspaper attacking Manning as pro British helped solidify support.
Clifford Leight an employee at the West Sewer Pipe factory fell this morning and cut a gash between his eyes at the top of his nose. Two stitches were applied and the wound closed at Holmes hospital by Dr Russell.
