A Ponough County Farm Bureau meeting organized township groups to donate more than 6,000 bushels of corn for starving regions in Europe and Asia. Township committees plan collection and loading at designated centers with payments routed to support the effort.
Bert Bean serves as chairman for Hire and Marion Herzog chairs Blandinsville. H. B. Welch, county chairman, is in Blandinsville today assisting in organizing the district.
Lucile Early of this city was chosen to represent Western Normal at the state Declamatory contest in Normal Illinois on April 1. Other contestants and their selections include Mary Johnston Grace Hunt Ruth Jones Dean Terrill Lucille Early Ruth Strome Katherine Fuhr Ruth Creel Marcella Hoyer Mildred Dinsmore Isabel Grant and Mildred Dinsmore among listed pieces.
Washington February 27 Champ Clark Democratic leader of the house was described seriously ill by his physician. The former speaker has been sick for several days with pleurisy complications and his condition grew worse overnight after a brief improvement yesterday.
Winifred Rigg a Macomb youth just over eighteen was arraigned in Justice Falkenthal's court on a forgery charge filed by Bert Kemble of near Adair. A continuance was set until March 3 and he remains in custody.
The Walnut Grove community meeting began at 1 30 this afternoon and was in session with lively discussion and notable interest among attendees.
C A Pech, Buckeye Pottery owner, says the pottery business is improving and will regain feet soon. The Buckeye shop will open Monday with most regular workers returning as orders resume, while Western Stoneware in Macomb reports no full reopening yet and Monmouth plants run part time.
Three wills from McDonough county residents move to probate. Ellen Walker of Peoria Street in this city dies February 16, leaving her husband Burton Walker life use of real estate worth 5 000 and personal property of 100. William N. Williams of Blandinsville dies July 10, 1915, leaving his widow Nancy Williams life use and children Mary Jeffries Susan McFall Georgie Stookey and Evan Williams equal shares with a 1 000 deduction for Evan if unpaid. Mary E. James of Bushnell dies February 2, leaving 20 500 in estate with 20 000 in real estate to be sold and proceeds divided per will.
Homer Burgess of LaHarpe was arrested Saturday night by McDonough County sheriffs, arraigned in Justice Falkenthal's court, and released on $500 bond to await the grand jury. Athlee Hancock of LaHarpe also faces the charge with $1,000 bond. Dozens of coats and caps disappeared during the basketball tournament. three caps owned by a local family were taken the same evening.
Washington reports the Costa Rican army surrendered at Coto ending the Panama Costa Rica threat. In six weeks the Public Health Service has operated nine hospitals for soldier patients, with some makeshift structures improvised from owner buildings amid rising accommodation needs.
The Supreme Court ruled the Federal Farm Loan Act constitutional clearing the way for land banks and farmer loans. Justice Day stated Congress had broad authority to establish banks previously upheld in Marshall era. Separate decision found sections of the Lever Food Control Act on profiteering unconstitutional.
Six Irishmen jailed in Cork were executed by military authorities after a death sentence for levying war against crown forces. The executions occurred in pairs at 15 minute intervals despite a Cork Corporation clemency appeal. In London, Lloyd George declared no change in British policy in Ireland and affirmed the chief secretary would continue in administration.
Thomas Pruitt 20 of Chicago pleaded guilty and acted as state's chief witness in the murder trial of Robert Swearingen former Aledo police chief. He was sentenced in Mercer county court to 15 years in Joliet penitentiary. Russell Wood of Augusta and Quentin Sherman of Aledo received 20 years each.
The Senate and House passed a bill limiting European immigration for fifteen months starting April first to 38 percent of 1910 levels. The measure, backed by supporters as a curb on arrivals, now goes to the president for signature.
President Wilson signed the Winslow bill authorizing partial payment to railroads under the transportation act. The measure becomes effective immediately and will make about 400 million dollars available to the railroads from the 600 million due from the government on guarantee accounts for six months of private ownership.
Mr and Mrs Bert Avery are the proud parents of a girl born yesterday. The birth adds a new member to the Avery family.
