A ceremony in Rome marked the crowning of 5X1 amid scenes surrounding a pond title dispute. Officials and attendees observed the event as part of the papal or imperial proceedings, with ceremonial rites conducted in a formal setting.
A vast throng estimated around 990 000 packed into St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican walls to witness the coronation of Pope Pius XI amid ceremonies and diplomatic presence. Attendees included Roman aristocracy and clergy as well as Swiss Guards, with cheers lasting for many minutes and the pope appearing on the balcony to bless the crowd.
Two alarms this afternoon report fires near the passenger depot on North Randolph Street and at Dr. J. W. Hermetet’s home on West Carroll. The first fire started when C B Q railroad workers burned grass beside James Manufacturing Co tracks and oil from a leaking car ignited a fence shed, quickly put out. The second blaze came from a chimney at Dr. Hermetet’s residence, burning a roof hole but covered by insurance. a seamstress alerted authorities after smoke filled the attic.
Fred Fritz, a Havana molder, was arrested on the square by Sheriff Sapp and Deputy Wilson after tips linked him to selling moonshine at a Grand Hotel room. Six pints of red eye were seized from his suitcase and several quarts may have been moved to cash. Fritz may be arraigned today. Also, Susanne Fisher departs for Dallas Texas to teach French at a private girls' school, accompanied by her husband A Fisher for the winter southward.
A meeting of the American Legion McDonough County Post No 6 is set for tonight at 8 80 in the club rooms. A smoker will follow and a fursibage contest is planned between the post and another unit.
Washington February 13. The oldest House member and former speaker Joseph G Cannon announced he will not seek re election from Illinois eighteenth district. He will be 86 next May and plans to retire after completing his present term, staying in Danville Illinois.
Macomb high school authorities launched a bid drive to host the state sectional basketball tournament. Principal Freshwater invited the board to meet in Macomb as the event runs March 10 11 and 12. Teams advance from district to sectional to state contests based on performance.
Fred Plassman of Chalmers township announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for county treasurer. Petitions will be circulated tomorrow. Plassman is well known county wide and considered one of the strongest Democratic contenders for voters.
Macomb’s Rexall druggist Pop Roark returns from Chicago after attending the Rexall dealers annual state meeting. He was elected to an officer position and honored by fellow attendees at the event.
Springfield, Feb 13. General Pershing addressed the Illinois convention of the Peaks Ocean to Ocean Highway association stating the A E B left roads in poorer condition than when received. He urged a transcontinental military highway to move troops if enemy blocked western passes, noting good roads aided the Civil War's end. He recalled Abraham Lincoln's support and described the Pershing Transport Route conceived years ago, passing through his Missouri home at Laclede.
H. E. Billings, long a Republican candidate for the state legislature, formally withdraws from the race this morning citing party harmony and a desire to improve McDonough county’s nomination prospects. He says the withdrawal is voluntary and made without promises or knowledge of other candidates.
The message reports Sarah Vos atesran is ill with pneumonia and her son Ter 89m, visiting Macon on business, rushed home upon learning his mother faced a sinking spell. The report notes urgent family concern and medical distress.
Stock exchanges observe a holiday with Lincoln's birthday on Sunday, resulting in no market activity today. Traders and brokers take the day off as financial centers pause operations across the country.
Lyle Comstock, a young farmer near Laharpe, was in a Saturday evening crash on Good Hope road when his Ford struck a concrete culvert and overturned. The windshield damage left him with chest bruises and facial cuts from glass. a passing car’s glare was blamed for blinding him. He was taken to town for treatment and the car was a total loss. The incident prompted warnings against high beams meeting oncoming traffic.
Chicago authorities search for Raymond Bischoff as thousands storm his office over seven million dollars entrusted to him. Bischoff admits a four and a half million shortfall and says no law was broken. Police seek his sister linked to bonds worth 590000 tied to oil schemes.
Boston reports half of New England cotton mill workers on reduced wages today with about 40 000 to 50 000 striking. The labor action forces many plants to close as protests grow across the region.
Dublin dispatch reports Michael Collins warns the American Association for Recognition of the Irish Republic not to aid a coup against the provisional government. He says war could follow if the treaty is rejected and notes British troops’ evacuation from Dublin was suspended amid Ulster tensions.
Amos Scott and Mahala A. Bean marked their 56th wedding anniversary on February 13 1866 at their home 321 North Johnson street in Bethel township. They married a year after his Civil War service begun as a private rising to first lieutenant in Company A 7th TH Inf. They have lived in Macomb 42 years and remained active in civic affairs amid warm wishes from friends.
