Report describes witnesses and suspects in a 1920 Aledo murder case. Aledo sheriff marks gun ownership linked to the crime scene. Clerks at Thrasher hardware identified two men buying a revolver to shoot rabbits, with further ties to the case shown in photos and store records.
The Chicago superintendent of schools authorized the reopening of German language studies in city high schools. The program had been abandoned when the United States entered World War I and is now resumed.
Kaufman and Pruitt, Chicagoan and Augusta resident, face murder charges in an Aledo court this week. Several others including Sherman of Galesburg are named as defendants. White and Johnson are subpoenaed witnesses. Pruitt reportedly paid for the gun with a roll of bills, though the clerk can’t recall the currency denomination.
Macomb Lodge B P D Elks 1009 invite members to a Friday night event starting with a smoker after dinner then a 6 30 banquet. Campbell's Orchestra will play during the banquet with speeches planned. Initiation of more than twenty new members follows, with varied amusements and late closing permission.
The petition seeking an election on establishing a new consolidated school in Hire township was withdrawn today. No election will be called, ending plans to consolidate district schools despite broad taxpayer support.
Workmen cutting a tree on East Jefferson street uncovered a glass telephone line insulator nearly fully covered by wood as the tree grew around it. The object was seen in the By-Stander office window and the age of growth is uncertain.
Springfield reports sweeping utility policy debates as lawmakers consider repealing the public utilities law and granting home rule over utilities to cities. Other measures include Thompson transportation plans, a public ownership amendment, and a Sheridan monument bill.
Washington February 9. The senate immigration committee disapproved the house bill by a 5 to 5 tie. The committee motioned to adopt a substitute tomorrow to restrict immigration by a percentage.
Floyd Dutch Creel of Pedk enridge Texas is visiting his mother Mrs Wm Creel at her East Washington street home for an indefinite stay.
Alderman Byron Butterfield reports he favors building a city owned light and power plant to replace the gas plant. He cites Poplar Bluff's cheaper electric rates, potential tax free bonds, and a $100,000 annual income possibility, urging citizen input and committee tours.
Forty five butcher shops and bakeries were closed in New Brunswick New Jersey as housewives protested high prices. A man buying rolls was attacked by the crowd outside a bakery, rolls torn from him and discarded. Owners stayed home amid the boycott.
Odd Fellows of this county and guests from nearby towns met Monday night in Bardolph for a regular monthly session with over 200 in attendance. The Blandinsville team led the first degree and the Plymouth team the third degree. Rebekah lodge members served a banquet. Judge C I Imes presided. Next meeting planned for Bushnell in March.
About 75 Western Illinois lumber retailers gathered in Macomb for the Western Illinois Retail Dealers Club midwinter meeting. The program included an Elks Club welcome, talks by Geo B Kerman and Geo Wilson, and a banquet at Hotel Pace with speeches by J W Paddock C L Schwartz and others. Club officers are George W Angel president, Arthur H Heideman vice president, and W M LeRoy secretary-treasurer.
Miss Lavinia Stinson supervises a Nor mal school class on a practical electric power demonstration at Purdum Electric Store. Students in household science viewed irons washing machines electric irons curling irons lamps toasters stoves and other electrically operated conveniences with explanations by the local electrician.
M Holmes of Peoria county, vice president of the Illinois Agricultural Association, will speak at community meetings to be held in Bushnell and Good Hope this week.
