In Chicago a Roosevelt rally before 600 women and supporters from Republicans and progressives framed a direct appeal for voters to back the Roosevelt ticket. Speakers, including Senator James Ham, urged frank, direct discussion of issues and stressed casting intelligent ballots. The crowd heard pledges of party unity amid factional tensions as the campaign begins.
Chicago Aug 10 Associated Press Mayor William Hale Thompson fires an open letter at Governor Frank O Lowden denouncing the Lowden administration accusing him of oath violations and broken pledges He defends wartime actions criticizes Lowden for sending troops to Chicago and alleges conflicts of interest in a family business connected to war profits.
Bold bank robbers who struck Commercial Savings in Moline last week slipped into Mt Sterling on Thursday. They arrived in a large car and stayed several hours before departing as detectives closed in. Police linked them to prior suspects and the Russell Bros shows, hoping to mislead pursuers.
Mr and Mrs Norris Mason of North Mechanic street welcomed a 7 pound girl born this morning. Both mother and child are doing well.
A Ford sedan left at the show grounds had its rear wheel and tire pried off while George Allison offered the wheel to the thief if returned. Police report few disturbances during Walter Mains shows and the Great Southwestern Carnival.
The funeral of Albert Z. Provard, fireman who dropped dead, was held at 3:00 p m Thursday at the Congregational church with firemen in charge. The casket rested at the family home 123 East Olio street until 2:00 p m.
Margaret Manna daughter of Mr and Mrs L N Wanna was struck by a slow moving automobile while crossing near her home in Monmouth Aug 10. She suffered a forehead cut and bruises but was reported to be recovering well and expected to fully recover in a few days.
Frank Green of Hamilton, one of the five accused in the Blandinsville picnic liquor case, gave a bond of 800 dollars and was released. The others had previously posted bonds a few days earlier.
The following persons left this morning for Tennessee to attend the Annual County Sunday School Convention: Misses L. Cooner Ames Watson Martha Moss Nellie Dunham Mrs. Herman Moss Mrs. B. Stanley and John Butler.
Reports from Summit House on Pike's Peak indicate seven inches of snow fell last night, a new August record for the summit location in Colorado Springs.
Clarence W. Greene of Albion Michigan was chosen by Hedding College executive committee to serve as President at Abingdon, replacing Dr W D Agnew who attends Columbia University. Greene headed Albion College physics for seventeen years and led Bay View summer assembly educational work. Rev J E Connor of this city serves on Hedding's board of trustees.
Charles Ponci, a Boston financier, surrendered to U S Marshals and was charged with mail fraud. He faced bonds of 25000 for an August 19 hearing as state authorities prepared a larceny case. Bank Examiner Allen said Hanover Trust Co capital may be wiped out amid federal probes. Ponci claimed assets of four million with liabilities over seven million. he ran a foreign exchange scheme paying investors fifty percent in 45 days.
The W R C will meet in their hall at 9:00 a m tomorrow morning and sew until noon. After dinner at 3:00 p m there will be a business meeting during which three new members will be initiated. All members are urged to attend. A small surprise awaits after the meeting.
