Commence Feeding New Grain Gradually
Advice on gradually introducing new grain to poultry feed. Some newly threshed grains may contain toxins causing bowl disturbances, darkened head color, rapid breathing and fever. A four to six ounce Epsom salts dose per hundred birds in a wet mash often provides relief, but unchecked cases can cause enteritis and deaths. Start with twenty five percent new grain when old stock is scarce and increase gradually. Toxic properties may fade after storage for about a month.
