Portage Plains have become Manitoba's vegetable industry hub with roughly 12 acres of diverse crops locally and larger holdings such as Connery Riverdale at 250 acres Mulders 200 Kroeker Brothers 200 and Jeffries 200. Lorne Jordan of the Manitoba Vegetable Growers Association notes these major producers supply about 80 percent of provincial needs and credits early pioneers like Bill Nebozenko and the 1961 vanguard for mechanization and improved storage, grading and packing facilities. The move toward mechanical planters harvesters and improved infrastructure marks a sustained upgrade in the Portage Plains agricultural sector. Acreage is up for root crops and celery, while cabbage is down.
