Bumper Rice Crop Lifts Indians in Ontario and Manitoba
A bumper wild rice harvest in northwestern Ontario and northern Manitoba boosts earnings for Indian workers. Manitoba officials estimate up to 1,000,000 pounds produced, with about 150,000 pounds handled by the Wild Rice Producers Cooperative. Workers receive a dollar per pound plus a 15 cent Christmas bonus. buyers pay $1.45 a pound to the cooperative. About 80 percent of production may be exported to the United States, where markets in New York and Chicago set prices. The crop is valued as a gourmet food, fetches high prices, and is often sold in small 4 ounce lots. Manitoba has 22 producing lakes and issues roughly 50 harvesting permits annually, with Indian harvesters required if available. Mechanical picking is used where possible, but the stalks must be beaten to thresh the grain, and wild rice in Manitoba must be processed locally.
