Agriculture Minister H A Olson told the Commons committee that responsibility for costs of removing rusty beetle from Canadian wheat shipped to China depends on who held the grain at infestation. He said elevator and terminal operators are generally responsible for grain in their possession but cautioned against rigidity. The inquiry aims to determine who should bear the brunt, with debates tied to a pending grains bill and proposed amendments to address grain handling responsibility and insurance against acts of God or enemies of the Queen.
The Ste. Rose Liberal Association urges Premier Schreyer to call a byelection in the provincial riding before the next Legislative session. In a letter they say delaying the byelection would deny basic rights and taxation representation. Gilbert Molgat, the former Liberal MLA, was named to the Senate.
