What to look for in refrigerators

Refrigerators and freezers are common in Canada and energy use is a key factor. Frost free models cost more upfront and run more energy, a standard 12 cubic foot unit uses about 850 kilowatts yearly costing around $20 while frost free may use 1,200 kilowatts costing about $28. Check insulation quality and avoid unnecessary frills like butter warmers or crushed ice dispensers to reduce energy use and extend motor life.
