Waterworks crews in Portage la Prairie faced a fountain like eruption on Saskatchewan Avenue and Third Street NW when an old hydrant blew from the ground during removal. Nine nearby valves were shut and a new hydrant replaced by about 10 am, leaving Third Street NW sparkling clean.

Fui Day draws 250 senior citizens across districts
On Tuesday November 16, about 250 seniors from Plumas Arden Pratt Rossendale Austin Holland Treherne Oakville Portage St Eustache St Francois Xavier Erie Headingley Marquette Inglis joined a community event. Registration started 10:90 a.m. Lunch and free coffee were provided. Activities included bowling at Delta Lanes won by V Higgs, a siibbage tournament, whist, bingo, and a talent show. Local hostesses and a Portage choir performed. A. J. Moore organized the day, with plans for a 1976 officers’ election.

Firemen battle plastic fire and toxic smoke in Portage
Portage la Prairie firefighters fought a plastic slag fire at the old brick yard site on 14th Street N.E. and 6th Avenue N.E. Fire crews used multiple trucks and thousands of gallons of water as flames re-ignited Friday morning and afternoon. The blaze posed a hazard to residents if winds shifted. the Fire Commissioner will investigate. Property owner is Alderman Bill Linden, manager of Troy Metal Industries, which dumps plastic refuse on site.
