Anniversary Honors For Culbert and Guests

Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Culbert were honored on Sunday Oct 24 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Nicoll for their 25th wedding anniversary. A corsage and boutonniere, a toast, and a dinnerware presentation followed a social afternoon, with a buffet supper and a guest list including relatives from Portage Newton Siding Macdonald Winnipeg Rossendale and Nicoll family members.

Sugar beet sugar production in Manitoba plan outlined

A major Manitoba sugar beet program aims to supply 80 million pounds of sugar to Ontario and Manitoba this fall. About 300 workers harvest 82 000 acres, with contracts to 550 farmers for 10 to 250 acres each. The plant processes beets into sugar molasses and cattle feed, selling byproducts to cover costs and profit, with the rest distributed to growers.

Manitoba election results show Duncan and Hulme winning municipal seats in the Rural Municipality of No. Two incumbents were elected by acclamation in other wards and village council. Jim Duncan received 298 votes to Loeppky 184 in Ward 2. Nelson Hulme led with 92 over Doug McGregor 61 and Jim Dickson 35 in multiple polls.

Egg Producers Board To Be Established

A nine man egg producers marketing board will be set up soon to regulate the industry. The plan aims to stabilize incomes through bargaining or managing supply with a December 15 start. A quota system will ensure many producers receive a sizable quick quota to market their eggs.

Tractor Crash Burn Fatal Near Ashern

RCMP report a fatal tractor accident about 20 miles north of Ashern. Mervin Gordon Gabbes, 18, was driving his farmer’s tractor around 6:30 Thursday when it rolled off the road and caught fire believed caused by an oil leak. The incident occurred near Ashern.
